History of the Highland Lakes Habitat for Humanity

History

Highland Lakes Habitat for Humanity was incorporated on March 15, 1994. In the past eleven years we have built nine homes for members of our community who had a need for simple, decent, affordable housing.

We have been and still are a small organization looking into the future and setting goals, which will help us to grow and that will enable us to build as many as three or more homes each year in the future.

We are not only involved in promoting Christian works in our local community but we have many volunteers who go to other parts of the U.S.as well as other countries to assist in Christian related projects.

In the mid 1990’s twelve families from this area drove to Wind River Ranch in Estes Park, Colorado, to work on a non-denominational Christian project. There was a tremendous need for a new cabin on the ranch to house a Christian speaker that comes to the ranch each week and presents a devotional study each day.

With the assistance of our local affiliate, twelve men and their wives drove to Colorado to assist in building a Habitat style house. By using a floor plan for the homes that are normally built locally, with just a few minor changes, they were able to complete there mission in three weeks.

One of our local leaders has just returned from Mexico where a team of Habitat volunteers from here and other parts of the U.S. spent seven weeks building homes for the needy in Mexico.

Habitat is not just in the business of building homes. We are a Christian ministry charged with the responsibility of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ here and throughout the world. One of the local volunteers who traveled with the team to Mexico was a retired dentist. He did not travel with the team as a homebuilder but as a lives builder. He went as dentist to help improve the oral hygiene of the citizens of the area in which the homes were being built.
